Tips to Create a Fun and Memorable Valentine's Dinner for your Children

Valentine's Day is not just for couples in love. Children enjoy this occasion not only for the sweet treats but also because of the pretty decorations that can stimulate their cheerful nature. This holiday is a great chance for us to let them experience the beauty of celebrating love and friendship. Make the occasion extra special by making it extra fun!

Forget the flowers
Instead of buying or picking flowers from your garden, try origami paper crafts. Create a bouquet of flowers or fill a vase with paper hearts for your table centerpiece. You can also make an origami mobile that consists of red cranes, flowers, and hearts. Ask the kids to help you out or set up a station where you can supervise them as they work on their creativity.

Table Setting
If you don't have a special table runner for Valentine's Day, wrapping papers can do the trick. Choose a colorful Valentine wrapping paper, lay it across the table, and cut the edges using a pair of scissors with scalloped edges. Add some small boxes covered in the same paper for accent. Don't forget to tie a pretty red ribbon around them to bring out the lovely design of your paper table runner.

Aside from the small wrapped boxes, you can also use candies in red wrappers as accents. Spread these red candies around the table along with some red and pink paper hearts.

Valentine Activities
Now that you have set up a kid-friendly venue for V-day, you have to keep up with the "fun" in your theme. Here are some activities to keep them busy with while you're preparing their meal.

Cookie Decorating
The best activities for children are the ones that fuel their creativity. Through cookie decorating, you're hitting several birds with one stone.

First, it teaches kids to be patient and lets them practice self-control by not eating their creations until they are done. Second, they can express themselves and you get to know them better through their designs. Third, it makes them creative!

A cookie decorating activity is easy to organize. You only need basic sugar cookies in various shapes and sizes, some pastry bags with red, pink and white icing, and of course, the children's imagination! Don't forget to take a picture of the kids' cookie creations before they go... omnonomnom!

If you have small kids who can't properly hold a pastry bag yet, you can organize a Heart Hunt wherein they just need to find the paper hearts that you hid around the house. At the end of the party, the child with the most hearts collected gets a special prize!

Remember, you don't have to buy everything. The items you need may just be in your attic or even in your garage. If you have a picture in mind of how you want your kids' Valentine's Day table to look, break it down and number the items that you need to buy as well as those you can actually recycle from home.

Valentine's Day doesn't have to be a seriously romantic occasion. Love comes in a wide variety of forms and it's only reasonable to include children in this celebration because their love is unconditional and irreplaceable.

Alison found a site.... To Dry For (that is literally what it is called..haha), and they had the cutest towels on there by Pintuck! I adored them, especially the one that said, Give Me Sunshine. I loved it so much I had to buy it and when it arrived I decided that this little towel was not destined for stains or dirty hands; no, no he was born for a much nobler cause....he would be my little artistic masterpiece! I mean come on, why can't a towel be art, I've seen some things in the MoMA that I stared at for thirty minutes and still couldn't figure out why it was there or why I was still looking at it.

SOOOO, I decided to head to Aaron Brother's and take full ADVANTAGE of their buy one get one for a penny sale. While I was there I asked how much it would be to have them custom frame my little ol' $16 towel. They worked up an estimate and replied, "THREE HUNDRED DOLLARS". AFTER, I picked my jaw up from the ground, I grabbed my towel, and my new stack of frames (well actually they grabbed my frames and loaded them up for me, which was very kind....having two crazy little ones with you while shopping does have its benefits), and decided I would take a crack at this myself. And so I did. And instead of spending $300, all it cost was the frame and 30 minutes of alone time while both boys were napping. Totally well worth it, as every time I look at it I smile!!!

Here's how I did it, I've included the steps just in case you have any towels or fabric laying around the house and would like a quick and easy way to display them!

Step 1: Iron towel/fabric with all your might

Step 2: Decide on your matte or background; I used the reverse side of the paper that came with the frame, what I really wanted to use was linen, but I didn't have any on hand, you could also use poster size heavyweight paper (when I want to do a project I want to do it right then, so there was no waiting for me...the paper actually turned out ok, but I may upgrade later on to the linen I had originally wanted).

Step 3: I adhered the towel to the paper with an Adhesive dot roller, so that it would stay in place when I started sewing (it worked perfectly, and is a necessary step)

Step 4: I picked a fun stitch, and brown thread and started sewing. THIS was the TRICKIEST step, only because the paper and towel were so large, it would have been great to have someone on hand to hold it so it didn't bend as I was stitching it (if you're using a fabric background instead of paper then it won't matter as much if it bends while you're sewing). I decided to make the stitching look loosey goosey, and not perfect, I thought it was more fun this way and went well with the towel...

Step 5: Place in frame, and step back and smile at your masterpiece!

The new beach collection on BHLDN is absolutely beautiful! Makes me wish I was on the beach soaking up the warm sun... not dodging the unbearable sun of the asphalt covered city. These pictures look so relaxing and breezy...

When browsing through the images on this incredible site I started thinking about how alot of their products would translate into home decor, especially for beach homes. I mean, who says if you live on water you have to decorate with conch shell lamps, coral and fish netting? Why can't you make it relaxing and breezy, while keeping with the beachy theme? I just never understood why so many beach rentals insist on using the gaudiest things they can find. I think from now on I will print these pictures out and leave them behind at every vacation rental I stay in.

Tea Towel Tuesday: Proper Skillet Care

Ever wonder about the proper way to season and clean a skillet? Well, it depends on who you ask. Some cast iron aficionados say you should never clean cast iron skillets at all, just wipe them out after each use. Others suggest washing with mild soap and water, and then re-seasoning. A third approach is to scrub with a mild abrasive, like coarse salt, and a nonmetal brush or clean rag.

To avoid smudges on all your kitchen towels, Real Simple suggests designating one towel to use exclusively for drying your cast-iron skillet. May we suggest the towel shown above from House 8810. I know you're thinking, "but it's too cute to get dirty"...think of it as adding character. You're skillet will thank you and so will your delicious dishes!

Did you know cooking in a cast iron skillet also has health benefits? It's made from iron, so cooking in it causes the food to absorb the iron. If you have an iron deficiency you could benefit from this. However, if you have excess iron health issues, it is not recommended that you use iron skillets.

I've always loved the look of needlework. Needle point, embroidery, crewel, cross-stitch, I love them all. I'm just not very good at it! I've attempted it on some things I've made and pretended I knew what I was doing but I really have no idea. West Elm

It seems to me that India has been the source of inspiration these days for fashion as well as home decor. Have you seen the new West Elm catalog or surfed Anthropologie lately?

It's all beautifully done and one technique I've noticed that I've always wanted to try myself is block printing, where artists hand carve pieces of wood to create a design. Ink is then applied to the block and "stamped" on to the fabric. I would never attempt to carve the block but thought about purchasing several wooden blocks and given it a whirl. This is a beautiful video from West Elm about how the India Block Printing process works. It's truly incredible!

You can find vintage woodblocks at local flea markets, antique shops and of course, Etsy. If you search something along the lines of "textile printing block" or "woodblock" under the "Supplies" category on Etsy you will find tons of cool ones.

Tea Towel Tuesday

It's HOT outside...so how about a refreshing drink recipe from Martha Stewart to help beat the heat! Serve it with the Berry Delight tea towels from House 8810 and have yourself an adorable AND refreshing afternoon.

Ingredients

2 lemons, quartered
1 cup fresh mint leaves
1/2 cup packed light-brown sugar
1/2 medium seedless watermelon (about 9 pounds), rind removed, flesh cut into chunks
1 cup vodka (optional)

Directions

Squeeze lemons into a large pitcher; add squeezed lemon quarters. Add mint and sugar; mash with a wooden spoon until mint is bruised and sugar is dissolved.
In a blender, puree watermelon in batches until smooth; pour through a fine-mesh sieve into pitcher (you should have about 8 cups of juice). Stir to combine. (Refrigerate, covered, up to 3 days.) Add vodka, if using; serve over ice.

Pity parties are a necessity for every official break-up, but if they go on too long they can get down-right annoying.

Hi friends! It’s Annie from THE NOW Stylebook. I’m thrilled to be guest-blogging on House 8810… my favorite stop for fun and whimsical finds.

For those of you who have stopped by THE NOW before, you’re well aware that I have an obsession for all things glam. Whether it’s my for living room or my wardrobe, I’m always looking for new ways to introduce a new element of glamour.

Well, hello House 8810 readers! We are absolutely thrilled to be guest bloggers while the gals are on maternity leave. We scratched our heads and stared at blank computer screens for a long time trying to think of what we could blog about for you guys. At first, we thought about some editing tools in photoshop, but then we decided that a lot of people don't have photoshop. Then we thought about different camera settings in different light, but then decided that a lot of people take photographs using the automatic settings on their camera instead of manual. So, then, we came up with the idea of backgrounds. Backgrounds are extremely crucial to a great photograph. Now don't get us wrong, the subjects of a photograph are by far the most important pieces to the puzzle. But, the background and setting are high on the list of importance to make an ordinary photograph an extraordinary photograph.

When we meet our clients for a session, we already have an idea of what type of photos they are looking for, be it lots of trees, tall grass, buildings etc. One of our favorite types of backgrounds are unique walls. You can usually find great walls on the oldest or the most hideous buildings. A lot of times you would never even think twice about the buildings, but we would be willing to bet after you read this post you will never look at buildings the same! Below are two photographs that we took in the Stockyards in Ft. Worth, Texas. The Stockyards have a lot of great walls for photos. This building has a blue wall with some wood on it and we just fell in love with it as soon as we saw it. It sounds so ordinary, but when you put your subjects in front of it, take that photograph and then edit to make the photo look the best that it possibly can, you get a photo that pops!

It's easy to find some incredible locations all over the metroplex, but our very favorite spots are those that we pass by daily; those that most never give a second glance. A run down structure, the side of a neighbor's house, the unique doors on a church, the side of a highway, and even a plain tin storage building are some examples of everyday places we have used in creating original photographs. The following picture was taken on the side of a barber shop. The painted purple brick turned out to be just the perfect touch to highlighting the subjects in this photo.

The peeling blue paint of the building in the next picture provides a remarkable texture that adds so much character and individuality. This office space, complete with the Texas flag painted loudly across the front, is now a popular spot by request.

Both of these places are located in high traffic areas and to be honest, they are both quite the eyesore at first glance. But, when you take a closer look, they are ideal for creating that special picture that will stand out among others. Take a look around next time you drive to the market, take your child to school, or run errands. You might be surprised what you might find. We guarantee you will find places that have desirable elements for creating your own original photograph. Be creative. Be inventive. We're confident you'll love the results!

Today, I want to introduce an amazing project that has been initiated and organized by Caroline Wanjiku Kihato and Elizabeth Kading. The project is called Kwerekwere. The term Kwerekwere means “foreigner” in Zulu, but is used derogatorily. The Kwerekwere project aims to overturn the negative perceptions of foreigners, refugees, the unemployed, and other economic or social outsiders, by providing women from these groups with income and opportunities to express themselves. By reclaiming the Kwerekwere identity, this project turns it into a productive and positive term that contributes to the community. The Kwerekwere label was established to help women gain skills, find long-term sources of income, and to encourage pride in our diverse backgrounds. Kwerekwere products are created from recycled coffee bean bags and African textiles, hand-made by women living in Johannesburg, South Africa.

This is Jariah, one of the sewers of the Kwerekwere project.

I got the chance to speak with Elizabeth about this project and here is what she had to say:

"From the inception of the project, I expected that having an income would make a difference in the sewers' lives, but I didn't anticipate the improved confidence and feelings of fulfillment I have witnessed. The transformation I have seen is astounding. I repeatedly receive gratitude for the changes that being involved in Kwerekwere has produced. The project has facilitated lifestyle changes, such as being able to stay home and look after children while still earning an income, but it has also facilitated that natural human need to explore, learn, improve, and grow. One woman now feels so good about her new skills that she stays up and continues to sew into the night after her children have gone to bed---it brings her joy to work with the materials, progress with her skills, and produce beautiful products. She even experiments with new designs when she is finished sewing wallets and Tote bags, and this woman barely knew how to use her sewing machine when she started working with us. When I'm visiting her house to bring her more supplies or collect finished products, not only can I see it on her face, but I can feel the sense of elation, confidence, and fulfillment that this project has facilitated."

Hey Y'all! My name is Becca, and I'm a southern girl and new mama who loves to craft, cook, and endlessly redecorate. I'm learning about photography and taking care of a new baby. I'm so excited to be sharing a little bit of what inspires me here at House 8810. Thanks ladies!

As an expectant mama obsessed with crafts and decorating, I spent many hours pouring over websites looking for ideas and inspiration to use in the nursery. Inspiration came not from brilliant designer, but from two items that have been hanging around my house for ages. My great grandmother was a talented crafter, and though I never got to meet her, I am blessed to have inherited some of her handmade quilts and doilies. Two of her quilts provided the inspiration for the whole nursery, and for this craft in particular.

The bright, fun colors take "gender neutral" to a whole new level. We didn't find out the gender of our baby before the birth, but I didn't want to be stuck in the usual neutral yellow/green rut. This quilt hangs over a spare chair in the corner of the room.

I'm using this quilt on the full size bed that is in the nursery. I am in love with the seventies vintage funkiness it is bringing into the room.

I used the colors in both quilts to choose ribbon for a mobile for above the crib. I used a wire wreath form and LOTS of ribbon to create this mobile and bring in all the bright colors. You can find a tutorial for the ribbon mobile here.

Does this handbag look familiar?

Yup, you guessed it! It's the handbag the Queen carried to the Royal Wedding and now everyone wants to carry it. The 85 year old Queen has started a fashion trend. According to the Today show, "The lucky supplier, Launer London, has reportedly seen a 60 percent increase in sales since the monarch flashed the status symbol at Westminster Abbey."

The Queen and Kate aren't the only ones getting all the attention, Princess Beatrice also caused quite a stir...you're shocked, I know, that that fascinating fascinator would cause people to talk. But it did! And it can now be yours! According to her mother, Sarah Ferguson, she will be auctioning it off on ebay and giving the proceeds to UNICEF to help children in need. We "Heart" this Heart Map

"Oh the Places You'll Go" (Dr. Seuss always knew what he was talking about)....Now, thanks to this, Places you "Heart" Map art, we found on Curbly, you can have a framed keepsake of all of the favorite places you have been! They suggested instead of buying it, here... You could DIY it. WE 100% agree. Not only could you use vintage maps & road maps, etc from your favorite travel spots, but you could also use fun post cards that you picked up while you were there! I love vintage looking post cards, and I think this just might be my next project! It would also be fun with a shadow box frame, and you could stick in some different keepsake items from past trips.

Definitely try it out, it would be great to put on a wall with other pictures from past family vacations!

CRAFT CHALLENGE!

House 8810 recently worked with the very talented ladies from The Crafting Chicks to help us with our very first CRAFT CHALLENGE!!! We sent each Chick a tablecloth from House 8810 and asked them to turn it into something fabulous. Well, that is exactly what they did!

Now, we need YOUR help. One of these lucky Chicks will be the winner of this craft challenge and you will be the judge. Just leave us a comment on which transformation is your favorite. We will announce the winner on Monday, May 9th. The winner will receive a lovely package from House 8810.

Chick #1:
BECKY received the Mixed Berries tablecloth.

How cute is this little number? And the precious girl wearing it? Becky used the tablecloth to make a pillowcase dress for her oldest daughter. Becky says: "She loves it. I think the vintage flare of the table cloth print goes perfect with this dress pattern." To vote for Becky write "BECKY" in the comments section.

Chick #2:
BROOKE received the Cottage Rose tablecloth.

Brooke went techy with her challenge. She used the pouch that the tablecloth came in and made an iPad cozy! What a great idea! Brooke says: "I made the iPad cozy by shortening the length of the pouch so that it fit the dimensions of my iPad. You could stitch it up or simply use one of those Heat 'n Bond strips to "hem" it. I already loved the rounded flap and the large rick rack that trimmed it out, so all I did was cut some strips of the tablecloth fabric and made them into small rolled up fabric flowers and added them to the front of the cozy. That's it!!! Totally simple but totally useful to me! :)" Easy Peasy! Those are the kinds of craft projects we like. To vote for Brooke write "BROOKE" in the comments section.

Chick #3:

NIKKALA received the Berry Delight tablecloth.

Nikkala made an adorable picnic blanket. And it's even quilted! Nikkala says: "As soon as I saw this tablecloth I knew that my project had to be something for the outdoors! It is so bright and summery. Finally, I settled on a picnic blanket. Although the weather in northern Utah hasn't been very cooperative for picnics :). The back is a lime green zebra print, and it is a super fun blanket. My two year old loves to name the fruits on it." How awesome is that? Functional AND educational! Love it! Chick #4:

JAMIE received the Howdy Buckaroo tablecloth.

Jamie has been wanting to add a little decor to her children's playroom so she made a tablecloth to fit the tiny table and a bunting to match. She also made flower vases! Nothing went to waste with this challenge. This turned out so cute, and you know we LOVE bunting at House 8810. Jamie says: "I cut the paisley off around the edge of the tablecloth, and hemmed the edges and added red ric rac to the new mini tablecloth. I couldn't let the darling paisley part go to waste so I made a little decor...penants to hang above the table (i love penants) and I wrapped some empty "chow mein" noodle cans with the same material and made them into vases by adding white daisies." Chick #5:

KIRSTEN received the Birds the Word tablecloth.

Kirsten made this adorable skirt for her daughter. I love how we can get a little more creative when it comes to our children's wardrobe. Kirsten used only things that she had around the house and it turned out beautifully! Kirsten says: "I decided to make a skirt for my 2½ year-old girl. I had so many ideas of things like wall hangings, matching mother/daughter aprons, then I decided to make this fun skirt. I measured one of my daughter's little skirts and just improvised. My mom improvises in sewing all the time, so I thought I would try my luck. The outer part of the skirt is from your cute tablecloth, and the underneath part, is a sparkly green chiffon fabric. My goal was to use only things I had on hand, it was a blast, thanks for the fun opportunity!!!" You're welcome! Tea Towel Tuesday: Royal Wedding Showdown

OK husbands, let's put this into perspective....the Royal Wedding is like if the Super Bowl only came around once every 30 years! THIS IS HUGE! People are taking the day off of work, sleepovers are being planned, count-downs have already started AND we don't even live in the UK!

I think we should have brackets/spreadsheets drawn up like we do for the NCAA championships and football games; it would consist of what style gown will she be wearing: strapless, lace, halter; will Sophie Cranston actually be the designer that Kate chose? What flowers will they be using, will she slip, will Prince William cry when she walks down the aisle, will Camilla smile, if she smiles will it be forced (the odds are high on this one), will someone's phone go off during the ceremony, if it does will they immediately be thrown out?? I think we totally need this....AND we need streaming live coverage in our office so we don't have to record 12 hours of coverage on our DVR's!

Alison, gave you the dish on Tea Towel Tuesday in February that the Royal Household had thankfully come to their senses and decided to keep in tradition and have an official Tea Towel for the Royal Wedding. The official Royal Tea Towel has not yet been released, but by all accounts it sounds as if it isn't going to be very snazzy. So far, all we have heard is that it will be white linen with Kate and William's initials intertwined with the Prince's coronet.

Since this doesn't send our hearts racing, we found some other Kate and William towels that do make our hearts pitter pat...

Royal INDEED, we adore this one from Ben Pentreath LTD.

This might be a PERFECT example of why the Royal Household first decided to ban the Royal Wedding tea towel because tea towels were in poor taste! We so happen to like their "cheeky" towel! Find it here...
